dmperspective.com

02 Jun 2010

Des Moines Perspective is a blog dedicated to discussion of urbanism and community in the Des Moines metro area. I use this web site/blog to advocate for more thoughtful, connected, compact development in Des Moines and the surrounding areas.

Update (5/2/2010):
After many months of (very) sporadic work trying to fix critical technical issues, last night I finally stumbled upon the reason behind dmperspective's web illness. It is fixed now, and I will resume regular postings.

Soon after moving to Des Moines, in September 2007, I started organizing the Des Moines Rehabers Club. The DSMRC mission is to promote neighborhood revitalization and restoration of Des Moines' unique building stock by informing, educating, inspiring, and supporting each other in all phases of home renovation and maintenance.

The idea for the DSMRC comes from my participation in the St. Louis Rehabbers Club, brainchild of my friend Marti Frumhoff who passed away in 2007. I hope that as the DSMRC grows and matures, we are able to have a positive effect on the preservation and rehabilitation movement in Des Moines.

What is the Des Moines Rehabbers Club

  • Monthly meetings – Each monthly meeting has a different focus. past meetings have included: tours of “works in progress,” how-to sessions on renovation tasks like reglazing a window, informational meetings with city code officials, etc.
  • Special Events – “How to Rehab a House in the City” classes will cover the renovation process from start to finish.
  • E-Mail Group – Free e-mail listserve allows members to ask renovation related questions, get contractor referrals, and make connections.
  • Web Site – The DSMRC web site at http://RenovateDSM.com will serve as an information clearinghouse for articles, project photos, links, and publicity.
